چکیده

Foraminiferal stable isotopes and assemblages from Franz Victoria and St. Anna troughs provide a valuable record of freshwater and Atlantic Water flows to the northern Barents and Kara seas from deglaciation to present. The dO and dC of planktonic Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (s) and benthic Elphidium excavatum were up to 1.4% lower than present at ca 13, 11.5, and 10 Cka (global sea-level corrected), mostly reflecting substantial freshwater inputs coincident with glacial–marine sediment deposition. Cassidulina teretis exceeded 40% of benthic foraminifera ca 13 and 10 Cka, indicating subsurface penetrations of Atlantic Water. The transition to postglacial marine conditions is marked by a 1% rise in foraminiferal dO and a sharp fall in % C. teretis soon after 10 C ka. These changes imply reduced inputs of freshwater and Atlantic Water. Subsequent isotopic and foraminiferal assemblage variations reflect changing Atlantic Water conditions ‘‘upstream’’ in the Nordic Seas and shifts between the warm Fram Strait and cold Barents Sea branches of Atlantic Water. We hypothesize that glacial-isostatically induced deepening by up to 150m influenced Atlantic Water inflows to the northern Barents Sea during deglaciation and the Holocene. Thus, effects of isostatic recovery have to be factored into paleoceanographic reconstructions. # 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

[Dr. Fontanier’s comment] The paper entitled “Variation in stable carbon and oxygen isotopes of individual benthic foraminifera: tracers for quantifying the vital effect” by Ishimura San et al. deals with the applicability of inter-individual delta13C and delta18O distributions (Standard Deviation within species) to reconstruct the bottom water isotopic signatures. This work is based on live an...

The biostratigraphy and paleobiology of Oligocene planktonic foraminifera from the equatorial Pacific Ocean (ODP Site 1218)

Planktonic foraminifera from a continuous Oligocene succession with clear magnetochronology and sediment cycles at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1218 (equatorial Pacific Ocean) were studied in the interval from 27 to 30 Ma. Paragloborotalia taxa are common and we examined their size, relative abundance, and stable isotopes. Multispecies stable isotope data indicate the depth habitats of Oligocene...

Vital Effects and Beyond: A Modeling Perspective on Developing Paleoceanographic Proxy Relationships in Foraminifera

This paper primarily reviews our recent work on the biology and geochemistry of foraminifera with respect to their use as paleoceanographic proxies. Our approach to proxy validation and development is described, primarily from a modeler’s point of view. The approach is based on complementary steps in understanding the inorganic chemistry, inorganic isotope fractionation, and biological controls...
